About Mavens
The Origin
"A Maven is someone who accumulates knowledge. The word, in Yiddish, means 'one who understands.' What they want, more than anything, is to tell you about it."
โ Malcolm Gladwell, The Tipping Point
What We Believe
The things people learn with their hands, their years of practice โ that knowledge is irreplaceable. No tutorial replaces a teacher who has been doing this for twenty years.
We'd rather have 500 Mavens we've personally verified than 50,000 we haven't. Every verified badge means a real conversation happened. Quality is the product.
The best learning happens when people feel safe enough to not know. We build spaces where it's okay to be a beginner, to ask the real questions, to be in process.
Yes, this is a platform with fees. But the book club came first. The business exists to sustain the community, not the other way around.
A ceramicist in Lyon and a weaver in Accra have equal standing here. We actively recruit Mavens from underrepresented geographies and language communities.
Art, craft, movement, embodied practice โ these aren't extras. They're how humans actually integrate what they know. We build with that truth at the center.
Before there was a platform, there was a book club. That's still where the heart of Mavens lives.
