About Mavens

It started with a book club,
a few honest conversations,
and the belief that people who know things should be findable.

Mavens began as a small community reading together, making art together, and showing up for each other. From that root grew a bigger question: what if the most skilled, most human experts in your community were actually findable?

The Origin

Not a tech idea.
A human one.

Mavens wasn't born in a boardroom. It came out of a book club β€” a small, intentional gathering of people who wanted more than surface-level connection. We read together, we made art together, we volunteered together. We showed up for each other in the way that most of modern life doesn't make easy.

Along the way, we kept running into the same problem: Florida is full of extraordinarily skilled people β€” ceramicists, weavers, bookbinders, healers β€” and almost none of them are easy to find. Their knowledge lives in their hands, not their SEO.

Mavens exists to change that. A curated, verified, human-first directory of experts who love to share what they know.

"A Maven is someone who accumulates knowledge. The word, in Yiddish, means 'one who understands.' What they want, more than anything, is to tell you about it."

β€” Malcolm Gladwell, The Tipping Point

What We Believe

The principles that shape everything we build.

01
Embodied Knowledge Matters

The things people learn with their hands, their years of practice β€” that knowledge is irreplaceable. No tutorial replaces a teacher who has been doing this for twenty years.

02
Curation Over Scale

We'd rather have 500 Mavens we've personally verified than 50,000 we haven't. Every verified badge means a real conversation happened. Quality is the product.

03
Vulnerability as Strength

The best learning happens when people feel safe enough to not know. We build spaces where it's okay to be a beginner, to ask the real questions, to be in process.

04
Community Before Commerce

Yes, this is a platform with fees. But the book club came first. The business exists to sustain the community, not the other way around.

05
Florida First, Growing Everywhere

We're starting in our own backyard β€” Tampa Bay, St. Pete, and beyond. Once we've proven the model here, we'll grow city by city, always with the same care and curation.

06
The Body Knows

Art, craft, movement, embodied practice β€” these aren't extras. They're how humans actually integrate what they know. We build with that truth at the center.

Before there was a platform, there was a book club. That's still where the heart of Mavens lives.

Meet the Book Club

The Mavens Book Club

A small, curated community that reads, makes things, and shows up.

The Mavens Book Club is a safe, intentional space centered around growth, learning, and what we call informatio sui perpetua β€” the perpetual shaping of the Self. The Latin root of "information" is informare: to mold, to shape. Everything we consume literally shapes who we become.

We don't just read β€” we bring ideas into our bodies through art-making, and into the world through volunteering. We meet both virtually and in person, organized around a seasonal theme that holds the quarter together. Membership is $24/month, with supported memberships available.

πŸ“–
Read Together

2–3 books per season around a unifying theme β€” read to genuinely wrestle with ideas, not perform having read them.

🎨
Make Art Together

Each season includes art workshops β€” sometimes with our own verified Mavens β€” where we process themes through our hands.

🀝
Volunteer Together

We take the themes off the page and into the world through volunteer opportunities aligned with what we're reading.

🌐
Meet Both Ways

Virtually and in person in the Largo, FL area. Both formats are real, neither is an afterthought.

Seasonal Themes

Each quarter holds a question.
We read into it, make into it, live into it.

Past Season Β· Winter 2024–25
Love as a Call to Action

What does love demand of us β€” not as feeling, but as practice? We sat with love as a verb: the kind that requires courage, presence, and showing up even when it's inconvenient.

The Body Knows: Returning to the Inner Compass

We live in our heads. We override our bodies with logic and productivity. This season is about returning to embodied knowledge β€” the intelligence that lives below the neck. Our reading is matched with art-making and practices that put us back in our bodies.
